The Importance of GRE and TOEFL in Graduate School Applications

Overview

  • GRE is a crucial factor in postgraduate applications
  • GRE is required for all applicants, while TOEFL is mandatory for international students
  • Verify score validity before submission: GRE scores are valid for 5 years, TOEFL for 2 years

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

The GRE is a standardized test that assesses an applicant's readiness for graduate-level studies. While it's widely used for various programs, including engineering and sciences, other specialized tests exist for specific fields:

  • GMAT for Business programs
  • LSAT for Law programs
  • MCAT for Medical programs

GRE Components

  1. General Test
  2. Verbal Reasoning (130-170 points)
  3. Quantitative Reasoning (130-170 points)
  4. Analytical Writing (0-6 points, in 0.5 increments)

  5. Subject Test (Optional)

  6. Available in Biology, Chemistry, Literature in English, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology
  7. Scores range from 200 to 990
  8. Typically required for prospective Ph.D. students

Key Points

  • Can be taken once every 21 days, up to 5 times within a 12-month period
  • Scores are sent to designated recipients 10-15 days after the test
  • During the pandemic, a home-based version was introduced

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

TOEFL is required for international students who are not native English speakers. It evaluates proficiency in four areas:

  1. Reading
  2. Listening
  3. Speaking
  4. Writing

Each section is worth 30 points, with a total possible score of 120.

Important Notes

  • Minimum requirements vary by program, typically starting at 80 for TOEFL iBT
  • Scores between 90-100 are generally acceptable for most graduate programs
  • Valid for 2 years from the test date
  • No limit on test attempts
  • Home-based version available during the pandemic

Preparation Strategy

Preparing for these exams is a marathon, not a sprint. For international students, it's advisable to:

  1. Focus on meeting the minimum TOEFL score first
  2. Then dedicate time to GRE preparation

Remember that most programs require scores above the minimum, not perfect scores.

Alternative Tests

Some programs may accept alternatives to TOEFL, such as IELTS or Duolingo. However, TOEFL is the most widely accepted.
