The Importance of Parting Ways

Parting is more important than meeting. While it's crucial to meet well, it's even more important to part ways with courtesy. The relationship between teacher and student has an inevitable aspect, similar to that of parents. A funeral is a more significant event than a wedding. When dealing with people, if you hurt their feelings, your connection with them ultimately becomes a negative one.

Wisdom from Mentors

Throughout my academic and professional journey, I've repeatedly heard this advice from those who have guided me. From my undergraduate years to my working life, I've been fortunate that most of my mentors were admirable individuals, true educators, and people of integrity. Of course, there were exceptions among professors and colleagues.

Lessons in Parting

One professor arranged a meal for someone who was giving up their degree due to unfortunate circumstances. They emphasized that it's courteous to say goodbye even if the relationship wasn't good. Ironically, this was the same professor who had the most disagreements with the student.

Another mentor advised, 'In the real world, no one takes your side. No matter how hurt your feelings are, the people here won't speak ill of you outside. That's the loyalty you owe each other as graduates from the same lab.'

One more piece of advice was to exchange apologies when parting ways, even if it's not entirely sincere. It's even better to have a drink together and let go of any lingering feelings.

Reflection

As I've lived, I've found these teachings to be true. I'm sharing this in hopes it might help others navigate this complex world more comfortably. These lessons are too valuable to keep to myself.
