The Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK)
Overview
The Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) is administered by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED), under the Ministry of Education of South Korea. Its primary objective is to evaluate Korean language proficiency for non-native speakers, thereby promoting the use of the Korean language.
Test Structure
TOPIK is divided into two types:
- TOPIK I: For novice level
- TOPIK II: For intermediate and advanced levels
The score level (Level 1-6) is determined by the total scores achieved. The following table shows the range of total scores for each level:

TOPIK I
- Two sections: Listening comprehension and Reading comprehension
- Multiple-choice format
- 30 questions in Listening, 40 in Reading
- Total score range: 0 to 200 (100 points per section)
TOPIK II
- Three sections: Listening comprehension, Reading comprehension, and Writing
- Listening and Reading: Multiple-choice format, 50 questions each
- Writing: Supply-type test with 4 questions
- Total score range: 0 to 300
Writing Section in TOPIK II
- Sentence completion type: Requires short sentence answers
- Essay type:
- Intermediate level: Descriptive essay (200-300 characters)
- Intermediate and advanced level: Argumentative essay (600-700 characters)
Test Schedule and Venues
TOPIK is held six times a year worldwide, typically in January (Korea only), March, April, July, October, and November. The specific schedule is announced on the official website (topik.go.kr) at the beginning of each year.

Benefits of TOPIK Results

Some universities, such as Korea University and Chungang University, offer scholarships to international students who achieve TOPIK Level 4 or higher.
