Universities Reached by Seoul Metro Lines 3 and 4
This article is the third in the series 'Universities reached by each Seoul Metro Line'. We'll explore the universities accessible via Seoul Metro Lines 3 and 4, known as the Orange and Blue Lines.
1. Dongguk University
Dongguk University is a 10-minute walk from Dongguk University Station (Line 3) or Chungmuro Station (Line 3, 4).
Founded by the Jogye order of Korean Buddhism, the campus is frequented by Buddhist monks from around the world. Similar to Christian educational institutions, Dongguk University offers religious classes—Buddhist equivalents of chapels—which students are required to attend, including Zen meditation.
The university is centrally located in Seoul, featuring an on-campus trail to Namsan Mountain, famous for the N Seoul Tower.
The surrounding area, Chungmuro, is historically significant in Korean cinema. Once dubbed 'Korean Hollywood', Chungmuro was the epicenter of the Korean film industry in the 1960s. While its influence has waned, it remains symbolically important. For instance, popular movie actors are still referred to as 'Rising Stars of Chungmuro'.
Dongguk University's Division of Theatre, with its 60-year history and strong alumni network leading the Korean film industry, is considered one of the best departments for drama and acting, partly due to its prime location.
Universities on Line 4
Line 4 passes through 'Daehakro', a neighborhood symbolizing university life. Originally home to Seoul National University's former campus, Daehakro became a hub for student activism in the 1960s, earning its reputation as the 'Street of youths'.
This area has evolved into a cultural center, particularly for theater arts. Daily, about 9-10 plays are performed in Daehakro, and the streets are alive with passionate busking performances.
Five universities are located nearby: - Sungkyunkwan University (Humanities and Social Sciences Campus) - Seoul National University (Yeongeon Campus) - Hongik University (Daehakro Campus) - Sangmyung University - Hansung University
2. Sungkyunkwan University (Humanities and Social Sciences Campus)
Sungkyunkwan University's Humanities and Social Sciences Campus is a 20-minute walk from Hyehwa (Seoul National University Hospital) Station, with a university shuttle bus available.
Established in 1398 by King Taejo of the Joseon Dynasty, Sungkyunkwan University boasts the longest history in Korea. Originally the highest educational institution for Confucian Studies, its College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy maintains a prestigious reputation.
3. Seoul National University (Yeongeon Campus)
The Yeongeon campus, housing medical departments including the College of Nursing, College of Medicine, and SNU hospital headquarters, is a 5-minute walk from Hyehwa (Seoul National University Hospital) Station.
4. Sookmyung Women's University
Sookmyung Women's University is a 15-minute walk from Sookmyung Women's University (Garwol) Station. Bus transportation from Namyeong Station (Line 1) is recommended.
Founded by the Royal Family of King Go-Jong in 1906, the university holds historical significance as the first Korean-led educational institution under Japanese colonization. It is renowned for women's education in Korea, second only to Ewha Womans University.
5. Hanyang University ERICA Campus
Located in Ansan, Gyeonggi-do, the ERICA campus is a 15-minute bus ride from Hanyang Univ. at Ansan Station, with a university shuttle available.
The campus has developed an industry-university-laboratory cluster with the Ansan and Siheung Industrial Complex, focusing on STEM fields. Its efforts have resulted in numerous national project selections and positive evaluations from government and industry.
